Maserati 3500GT Coupé Speciale

Chassis AM101.1858 — Engine #101.214

This unique Maserati 3500GT Coupé Speciale is the only Maserati ever bodied by Moretti, making it an extraordinary piece of Italian coachbuilding history. Originally delivered new to Copenhagen, Denmark in 1962 as a Touring-bodied coupé, the car suffered an accident in 1965. Rather than simply repairing the damage, the decision was made to have the car entirely rebodied by Moretti in Torino.

The resulting one-off coupé was displayed at the 1966 Geneva Auto Salon. Despite being quite a bit larger than Moretti's typical fare of small and medium displacement Fiat-based cars, the design worked beautifully — featuring a long hood and Kamm tail that produced a swift, elegant fastback silhouette. Period magazine photographs show the car in a slightly darker red than its current presentation, wearing Danish license plates.

The car's history from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s remains unknown, but by the 1980s it was with a collector in Germany. In 2000, noted Maserati collector Alfredo Brener acquired it and brought it to the United States, where it was gently refurbished. The car was repainted in bright red, and its white leather interior was redone around the same time.

Under the hood lies Maserati's formidable 3,485cc DOHC inline six-cylinder engine fed by three Weber carburetors, producing 220bhp at 5,500rpm, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The mechanical specification includes independent front suspension, a live rear axle, and four-wheel disc brakes.
